How to choose veins which to avoid A colorful, illustrated step-by-step guide to starting a standard IV 4 methods to threading the catheter 3 approaches to inserting the needle Guide to the “Floating technique” Visual guide to what you are doing wrong when a vein blows Finding and avoiding valves The Y-Bifurcation Inserting IVs in the elderly Vesicant medications Assortment of tips and tricks By the end you will have not just the skills to start an IV, but the confidence to go out there and give each patient your two best shots. Example Chapter Threading the catheter At this point both the tip of the needle and the tip of the catheter are inside the vein. You will now need to thread the rest of the catheter into the vein. The catheter is fully inside the vein when only the hub sticks out. There are several different methods to advancing the catheter The Two Handed Technique You have already visualized flash, lowered your angle, advanced 1-2mm and released the tourniquet. Continue holding the needle in place With your non-dominant hand, grasp the hub of the catheter and slide it forward into the vein Slowly withdraw the needle Place your thumb on the hub of the catheter to hold it in place Use your index finger to press down above the site to prevent blood from spilling out The Single Handed Technique You have already visualized flash, lowered your angle, advanced 1-2mm and released the tourniquet. Continue holding the needle in place. Use the index finger of the hand that is holding the needle to slide the catheter past the needle Continue sliding the catheter until it is fully inside the vein. With the above two techniques, be careful that you are only advancing the catheter into the vein and not the needle. If the catheter is inside the vein it should be relatively easy and painless to advance it. Unlike the needle, the catheter is soft and flexible so it will be difficult to slide it in unless you are inside the vein. If the flashback was very small, you may feel resistance...

I’ve been inserting IVs for a couple of years now, but nobody ever really taught me how or told me the fundamentals behind some of the techniques. This book explains it well and gave me insights on what I can do next time if I have a difficult stick patient. I highly recommend this book.

Good information, good illustrations. Really like the section (although very brief) on infiltration/extravasation. Very good resource for the newbie but a pretty thorough review for us experienced who just need a review. I bought this book and another I recommend. Both worth the money and time spent reading. Can’t help but recommend buying both books as they each have their stronger points.

Recently, I went online looking for books that would provide helpful information on "How to start an IV". During my search, I only came across the following two books: 1) The Art of the IV Start and 2) Rapid Guide to IV Starts. At the time, both books had pretty decent customer review ratings, so I purchased both titles. Unfortunately, once I received this book and inspected it, I noticed it does not provide any information about the author(s) or their credentials. Because of this, this book is rendered useless and I would not recommend it to others because there is no way of knowing if this book is from a reputable source.

I've been an RN for 15 years & never thought I could learn so much, in so little time and for such a small price.

The diagrams in this book are SO helpful for someone who is learning how to self-administer specialty pharmaceuticals. Now, the drawings are focused on IV Catheter, with less mention of butterfly needles. Butterfly needles are more common for self-administration. However, the vein diagrams helped me understand where the needle is actually going when I insert, look for flashback, level out, and push a little further. The tips for people with "rolling veins" and easily blown veins have saved me a lot of unnecessary bruises and needlesticks! Even the phlebotomists at the lab take me seriously when I pass along these tips to them before they attempt to draw my blood. The information in the book is sometimes repetitive, but the diagrams and tips were well worth the price. Really, can you put a price on avoiding unnecessary needle sticks??? Plus, the confidence I gained from this book has helped to facilitate my home-administration of specialty medicine in a timely manner, to treat my symptoms within hours. That is worth its weight in gold.As an aside: If you are purchasing this book in order to learn self-administration of a specialty phamaceutical, or if you are a "difficult stick" -- I highly recommend purchasing your own fabric tourniquets. Amazon carries them in rainbow colors for a reasonable price. The cheap rubber tourniquets always bruise me, and my veins are more likely to roll. However, the fabric tourniquets are far more comfortable, they do not bruise me, and I find my veins are easier to stabilize. Don't be afraid to bring your own to your next blood draw!

The pics and illustrations really help you visualize what's going on inside the vein with the needle. Now I know what's actually happening when I get a partial flash abruptly followed by a blown vein!

great reference material for learning or even improving your existing skills

Quick read. Good info w/o excess descriptions gets to the point(s).
