This has all the romantic tension of twilight combined with the origin story of Aguaman. Granted, I think it is better than Twilight, but I don't think I was quite looking for the start of a love story. Also, since I have just seen the newest Aquaman movie, I was alternating between thinking that this is a just a rehashing of the movie and thinking, wait, that is not how it was in the movie.Ok so that is all the negative I can say about this, because from there, it was a page turning read, the art work was very good and we all really like it. I love that the protagonist is female which is fantastic for the kids to read. I love that there was a minimum of swearing and violence and again, that is fantastic for the kids. And finally, I love that the kids passed it from one to the next and talked about it amongst themselves. Anything to get kids reading is fantastic.

Mera carries a lot on her shoulders as the Princess of Xebel, some pressure comes from her father and the legacy of the office, and some comes from within, the expectations she has upon herself. In a origin tale of sorts, the meeting between Arthur Curry, Aquaman, and Mera, we see a young person who is positioned between her prescribed role and what she wants for herself. I loved the design style and the initial premise of plot and character development, yet found the whole story arc lacking.Mera's kingdom of Xebel is the heel of Atlantis, and the people are none too happy about it. Instead of asking her daughter's permission, the king directs her betrothed to go to the surface to hunt down and kill the long-lost prince of Atlantis. Hearing this, Mera takes it upon herself to go in his stead. To challenge herself. When she meets her prey, she finds the unexpected, a person she could easily like.Character designs, backgrounds, and the whole aesthetic is awesome. Futuristic, yet retro and mod. But I found the dialogue tedious at times, a lot of back and forth between Mera and Arthur that may have been reduced. And some of the reveals turned into info dumps because there wasn't as much context built in at the beginning of the novel. Overall, a book that has all the parts of a good story, but the pacing and character development could use some work.

*I received this book as an eARC from DC Ink via Edelweiss. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.*DC Ink is bringing Young Adult stories about DC characters to the graphic novel format! The first book is Mera: Tidebreaker written by Danielle Paige. Steven Bryne illustrates this story in mostly blue tones with highlights of orange for Mera's (and her father's) hair. This graphic novel tells the story of a young princess trying to live up to the model left behind by her deceased mother who was both a queen and a warrior. The royal politics of the underwater world is at the forefront of this story. There are a lot of princess tropes that Paige plays with. It's like if The Little Mermaid was on a mission to kill Prince Eric. This is a fun "fish out of water" assassin princess story. Mera thinks she has it in her to kill the Atlantean Prince Arthur and bring his head back to her father, but is that really the type of person she is?I give this book a 3.5/5. Paige merges classic tropes with empowering characters, but it could have had more of an original feel to it, in my opinion. I'm looking forward to the other DC Ink titles. I already have downloaded Raven's!

I was really looking forward to starting this graphic novel as I am a fan of superheroes but it just didn’t live up to what I was expecting. The characters felt pretty one dimensional and when their part of the plot was done they weren’t really mentioned until the very end, minus a couple characters. The instalove between characters was another thing I didn’t like. I am just not a fan of it and it just didn’t work in this graphic novel. The plot felt pretty rushed and maybe that is another reason for lack of character development. I would have loved to see it spanned out more. It would have made for a better flow of things.Although the characters and plot fell short, I did enjoy the artwork and the colors they decided to use for the illustrations. The vibrant orange was beautiful against the teal blue.Overall, it lacked too much for me to give it a higher rating. I am sure others will find it to be a great read especially if they are a fan of superheroes and instalove doesn’t bother them!(I received a digital copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own.)

I was so excited to read Meara: Tidebreaker I may have bounced up and down just a little when I was chosen for a review copy.. I love everything I have ever read by Danielle Paige and this graphic novel was no different. Plus I really enjoy Aquaman and Meara in the Aquaman comics. The beginning of Meara and Arthur Curry aka Aquaman's love story comes to life in beautiful shades of blues and greens and Meara's striking read hair. A teenage Meara, princess and warrior in training, resents Atlanteans rule over Xebel. She is also angry at her father's plan to give ruling of Xebel to her unwanted fiance Larken in return for the Atlantean prince's head on a platter. Determined not to marry Larken and to rule Xebel herself, Meara strikes out to bring Arthur Curry's head home to her people. Her heart has other plans as Arthur is too good for her not to fall in love with. A sweet love story with a strong female lead, Meara: Tidebreaker is sure to be a favorite and worthy to be read over and over again. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from Netgalley.
