Eliot probably could have devoted quite a bit more space to this sprawling, ambitious book. Because Henley is the only Eagle to give input into the book, the focus is pulled away from the other band members. Although Eliot follows the trevails of Frey, Meisner and Leadon, he virtually ignores, or spends little time on the other band members beyond their immediate involvement in the band and, instead, focuses quite a bit of time on "unofficial" band members Jackson Browne and J. D. Souther. The book would have earned five stars if Eliot had spend a little more time on reflecting as to the true dynamic between Henley and Frey. We get little sense of true reason they were drawn together as collaborators beyond some superficial analysis.A good template for Eliot to have followed would have been Mark Hertsgard's excellent book on the Beatles, A DAY IN THE LIFE. That book was unauthorized and had absolutely no input from any of the band members, but still comes off as a stunning analysis as to what made the band click, their place in music history, their influence and, finally, the collaborative process of Lennon and McCartney.Eliot hasn't written a bad book, but it is a little on the lite side. If Eliot hadn't been so ambitious he could have easily put together a great book focusing on Henley/Frey, the band, or the souther California scene that contributed to the band's formation and success. Instead, he tries to focus on all of the above in a brief, superficial book.Nevertheless, Eliot has some compelling stories to share and Henley's short involvement with the book makes it of interest to most fans. Read it in the bookstore, or at the library.

I had read the book by Don Felder Heaven and Hell: My Life in the Eagles (1974-2001) and liked that book.I would put this book on par with that one.One major difference is that this book has a lot more personal information about Don Henley and Glenn Frey. There is even a small tidbit about Stevie Nicks' song "Sara".There is also a lot more in this book about the forming of the Eagles and the background of the members. This is a 5 star book for the research and wide range of information in it.

Given the recent passing of Glenn Frey, there is plenty of interest in The Eagles. One think that I didn't know was that Glenn Frey wanted to call the band just plain Eagles after seeing one fly over them while they staying overnight at the Joshua Tree in California. If you look up any history on 60's and 70's era bands, you see all kind of crazy names for bands that didn't really gain any traction. Perhaps they had one hit or two but not alot of hit songs to remember.Frey and Henley turned out to be the two-some that wrote most of the early songs but when the group split up for 14 years, Henley and the others (Joe Walsh included) wrote many of the rockin' songs that elderly people like myself truly enjoy. One could say that in the early years, the group wanted to be much like Peter, Paul and Mary or the Mama and the Papas. They played back-up to Linda Ronstead for awhile and one wonders why she just didn't join up with them. But then she fell in love with Jackson Browne, who helped with her songs and they stayed together for some time. Jackson Browne continued to write on his own and actually helped Frey with some songs that he needed finished. It is ironic that he "played" Glenn Frey's part at the Grammy Tribute to the group. One could also wonder what kind of songs the group would write during the 14 years that they stayed apart but one gets the sense that the intense nature of their recording sessions, combined with the drugs and the groupies did them all in. It was hard to live that life forever and indeed two of the Eagles left the group because of the drugs that were so invading during that time. Surely the drugs and the late nights and the hard live changed all of them and not perhaps for the better. The Eagles songs will be around as long as the 60's generation stays alive yet even today, my grandchildren love to listen to their songs because they are so real and are sstories that people can easily remember and relate two. I have see the Eagles twice at the Garden and I will always remember their concerts. A Pieceful Full Easy Feeling..while on the road and in my car. Plenty of memories here.

Eliot's book gives a nice overview of the rise, break up, and reconstruction of the Eagles. The book often has a gossipy feel, and is often punctuated by Eliot in the role of sanctimonious rock critic. Eliot's main focus is on the personalities and relationships both within the Eagles and externally with figures such as David Geffen and Irving Azoff. The book is also laced with discussions of the evolution of music during this time and the actual business of music.Perhaps the most interesting part is the afterword to the latest edition, where Eliot's claws are out and his animus towards Don Henley is on full display.A nice, solid effort to tell the story of the Eagles and place them in Rock and Roll history.

I’m 26 years old and have a new found love and obsession for the Eagles and other 70s rock artists. This book really lets me dive back into a better time long before I was born! I can’t get enough!

This book is a must have if you are a huge fan of the eagles. It includes a ton of events that I had never heard of, that were told by people that were there (tour crew that stayed anonymous). It showed how crazy the band really got as some points, they were grade A rock stars. Great read and great book my Marc Eliot.

then this book is for you! Chock full of information I never knew about the band! Buy it, you won't be disappointed!

This book is comprehensive and extremely well researched. Don Henley was interviewed several times and you'll "hear" his voice frequently. The book skims over nothing: you'll read about Don's early days in Texas as well as the involvement of Ricky Nelson's manager in the shaping of the Eagles.

Infirmative good book!! I recommend thus for any Eagles fan!!
